So You Want to Be a Successful Contractor? Start with the Essentials.
This two-day course is designed for new and established residential and commercial construction business owners, as well as general and specialty contractors. Many are highly knowledgeable in their trade, but do they know how to run their business proftably?
Using Michael Stone’s Markup & Proft, this course explains in plain, simple terms what it takes to survive and thrive in the construction industry. Over 90% of construction businesses fail within 10 years, with poor cash fow as the primary cause, driven by not charging enough, improper use of change orders and contracts, having too many employees, improper payment schedules, and lack of proftable sales.

A message from the instructor: In 2015, I thought I was a very successful builder. We had a ton of work and were very busy. But, under the veneer of all of that, things were not going so well. Cash fow was tight. I was using credit cards and lines of credit to pay bills. My contract was a one-pager and gave me no help in dealing with very demanding customers who were refusing to pay.
At that time, a contractor friend invited me to a two-day class in Roanoke called “Making the Numbers Work in Construction” with a guy called Michael Stone. I could see no polite way out of it and reluctantly went. That was the best $500 I ever spent! There is simply no other way to describe it: I saw the light!
Things were still a struggle for a while. (It takes some time to recover from $100K in debt.) But I continued to read Stone’s books and apply the things I was learning for our business. Over 10 years later, I am the proud owner of a proftable company, largely thanks to Stone’s material. I have a real desire to share this knowledge and experience with other contractors who are eager to learn. If you want to talk more afer you read this book and take this class, it would be my pleasure.
Michael Stone’s no nonsense approach, combined with the instructor’s experience as a business owner, will equip participants to deliver excellent service and make a good proft — building companies that are anti fragile and continue to raise the bar in the Greater Lynchburg Region.
