Heavy Equipment Operations covers the foundational skills of safety, pre- and post-operation checks, site planning and layout, and operations for a range of light-duty and heavy equipment. Heavy Equipment Operations supports multiple unique training pathways and credentials for Utility Tractors, Forklift, Loader, Dozer, Motor Graders, and more. The three-level Heavy Equipment Operations curriculum is designed to be used flexibly in conjunction with other craft training material.  It also complies with the U.S. Department of Labor’s standards for apprenticeship programs.

The HEO Level 1 course has eight modules: orientation to the trade, heavy equipment safety, identification of heavy equipment, basic operational techniques, utility tractors, introduction to earth moving, grades and vertical-mast sit-down counterbalance forklifts. After successful completion of all eight modules and homework assignments, students will receive the NCCER Heavy Equipment Operations 1 credential.

Class meets every Monday and Wednesday from 5:30-9:30pm and two Saturdays, dates to be determined, from 8:00am-4:00pm. Students should have basic computer skills, basic math skills and be able to use a calculator to complete NCCER module testing.

Students must complete and pass all module testing to be eligible to participate in hands-on operations of equipment and simulators.

CVCC has a lift truck, wheel loader, excavator and skid steer loader that students will practice on along with various simulators in the classroom.

Students must complete and pass all modules to be certified in NCCER Heavy Equipment Operations Level 1.
