The NCCER Welding Level 1 course introduces students to the fundamental skills and knowledge required for a career in welding to include the following topics: overview of the welding profession, safety practices, oxyfuel cutting techniques, base metal preparation, factors affecting weld quality, and shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) equipment and techniques.

This course is challenging, fast-paced, and requires strong commitment, focus, and personal responsibility. Because this course follows the national NCCER curriculum, attendance and punctuality are critical for student success. Students must be in class on time, prepared, ready to learn and work safely. Success in this class also depends on reading the textbook and studying outside of class to prepare for online module tests.

NCCER Level 1 Welding Certification is recognized nationwide by employers and contractors in the welding and construction industries. Completing this course not only builds a solid foundation of welding skills and safety knowledge but also provides students with an industry-recognized credential that demonstrates dedication, reliability, and readiness to begin a professional welding career.

Welding Level 1 has twelve modules: orientation to the welding trade, welding safety, oxyfuel cutting, basic communication skills, basic employability skills, introductions to materials, basic math for welding, drawing and welding symbol interpretation, introduction to SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding), SMAW- equipment and setup, SMAW- beads and fillet welds, and SMAW- plate welding.

Students should have basic computer skills, basic math skills and be able to use a calculator to complete NCCER module testing and completion of homework assignments in CANVAS. Students must complete and pass all modules to be certified in NCCER Welding 1.
