The Basic Rider course is a complete entry-level course for students that want to learn to ride a motorcycle safely. This course is not for experienced riders. Students will learn the basic skills of motorcycle operation and safe riding strategies under controlled range conditions.
This program requires a completed online portion. After registration you will receive an email with instructions to complete an assignment. Once completed you will receive a completion certificate that you must bring to the instructor on the first day of range instruction. Failure to do so will result in dismissal from the program without refund.

Course requirements:
  • certificate of completion for online portion
  • good physical condition
  • valid driver’s license or learner’s permit
  • students under 18 years of age must have parental signatures on waiver forms
  • sturdy closed toe shoes high enough to cover the ankle
  • long pant without holes in the legs
  • full fingered gloves
  • eye protection
  • ¾ DOT approved helmet
  • ability to operate a bicycle
Motorcycles, none larger than 500cc, and DOT approved helmets are provided. If you choose to use your own helmet it must be at a minimum, a ¾ DOT approved helmet. NO skull or half helmet are permitted.

Upon successful completion of the course each student will receive a license waiver to be taken to the Division of Motor Vehicles for endorsement, if eligible.

In Virginia, completing a Virginia Rider Training Program (such as the Basic Rider Course) provides a DMV motorcycle license waiver for the written and riding skills tests. Riders 19 or older with a valid license can use the completion certificate as a temporary 30-day authorization and have one year to officially add the Class M endorsement.

Key Aspects of the Virginia DMV Motorcycle Waiver:
  • Eligibility & Requirements: Must be 19 or older, hold a valid Virginia driver's license, and successfully pass an approved training course (e.g., MSF Basic RiderCourse).
  • Waiver Benefits: The course completion certificate (TSS 97) waives the need to take the knowledge (written) exam and the on-cycle road skills test at the DMV.
  • Temporary Operating Authority: If you hold a valid Virginia driver’s license, the certificate acts as a temporary Class M2 endorsement for 30 days from the course completion date.
  • Finalizing Endorsement: You must visit a DMV office with the certificate within 30 days (or at least within one year of completion) to officially add the motorcycle endorsement to your license.
