Program Description:
The Phlebotomy Technician course is 45 hours of classroom instruction on CVCC’s Main Campus and some virtual online instruction along with 100 clinical hours at an assigned site with 100 successful, unaided blood collections including venipunctures and skin punctures at multiple Centra locations.


This program is designed to prepare students to be professional Phlebotomy Technicians dedicated to safely collecting venous and dermal blood specimens for laboratory testing.

In addition to classroom training, students will participate in clinical training that will be completed in an accredited laboratory at a local medical center. Clinical hours are 8-hour shifts Monday through Friday. Hours are 5am-1pm or evenings 2pm-10pm.  

The program prepares graduates to sit for the ASCP-BOC (American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification) national certification exam.

  • The exam review and exam will occur following clinical rotations.
  • Required clinical immunizations at clinical locations vary and can include the following: TB skin test, flu immunizations, and titers.  Student may incur a cost for immunizations. 
  • Centra student Covid policy requires a copy of the COVID vaccine (both doses included and must be 14 days past the last dose given in series).  Exemptions for religion or medical reasons can be provided if applicable.

 Admission Requirements:
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Background check- Students are required to have a Criminal Background Check with the Virginia State Police. Students must bring a $20 money order payable to the Virginia State Police and a state issued ID or driver’s license.
  • Students will be required to have an 8-panel drug screen. Please contact Blue Ridge Scientific – student is responsible for the fee of $45. Please request that your results be posted to the portal for CVCC access.
  • HealthWorks - student is responsible for the fee of $45. Please tell them you are a CCMA student at CVCC and need your results sent to Workforce at CVCC.
